I’m sure by now you’ve heard all the hype surrounding Dark Souls 2 and whether or not it lives up to expectations. This review will finally help you decide if DS2 is right for your gaming needs!
Why Dark Souls 2 is the best?
When it comes to Souls games, Dark Soul II is one of the most polarizing. However there are still those who consider this game as their favorite in the series and for good reason too!
1. Dark Souls 2 is the best game because it’s challenging
If you are looking for a game that is not going to hold your hand, then Dark Souls 2 is certainly the most challenging of the series. I mean come on guys, there are some absolutely brutal bosses in this game who will test your patience and skill to the absolute limit!
It was one of Namco Bandai’s goals with this game to make it more accessible than previous games, while still retaining the series level of challenge. It’s clear they succeeded in this regard too!
There are some moments in Dark Souls 2 that will test you to your limit. As mentioned before, if stuff goes wrong you could find yourself in a very nasty situation and no one wants that right! Dark Souls 2 is the best game because it’s unforgiving
Every mistake you make in dark souls 2 will be punished, if you swing your sword a little too haphazardly and miss that enemy could punish you by taking half of your health. If you die to a boss, no matter how long ago, you will respawn at the nearest bonfire without any of your souls/ humanity, meaning you have to fight all over again!
Dark Souls 2 is a game that knows how to punish the player. You will never feel safe in this world and that’s what makes it so fun!
2. Numerous Patches Post-Launch
When a big game is released there are often numerous patches. However Dark Souls 2 saw 8 different patches to the PC version alone! This shows that the developers care about their community and want them to have a great experience with their games. On top of this, all paid DLC for Dark Souls II was developed completely by From Software themselves, free from any interference from publishers.
This is a great way to show their customers that they appreciate them and want the best experience possible with their games!
3. It has a well-developed world with lots of intricacies and secrets
Dark Souls 2 has a lot of cool and interesting lore attached to its world. There is so much beneath the surface of everything that’s going on, it’s amazing! The lore can be found everywhere in this game from item descriptions to environmental storytelling through enemy drops and level design.
Take the Iron Keep for example:
” The armour of the first knight was made from special white iron. As it is said, the more noble the recipient of these plates, the greater their defence. The Knight King Rendal would dress in his full plate and travel great distances to hear tales of heroism and chivalry. For each knightly deed he heard, he would reward that tale with a part of his armour. ”
This lore is found on the Iron Keep smith which can be reached before you actually enter this area! So not only does it tell us about the Knight King Rendal, but also what kind of character he was too. Dark Souls 2 is the best game because it’s challenging
There’s a host of changes made to the PvP system in Dark Souls 2. The biggest example is that there are no longer any pauses during battle. Thus fights are more intense and filled with action!
A new mode was introduced with the PC version of Dark Souls 2 called “Battle of Stoicism” which allowed players to fight with only a bow and arrow. This mode was really fun because it required lots of skill to accomplish anything!
In addition, the matchmaking system was overhauled by allowing players to become ghosts that can be fought by others. You can watch their encounters on line and even rate them at the end of the game. So if someone is being a total wanker you could just avoid them!
This system will likely go unnoticed by most players as it’s intended for experts, but this addition demonstrates how much care went into Dark Souls 2.
The PVP in this game is much more tactical and requires so much more skill than previous games too. It really feels like a battle of wits between two players.
5. Scholar Of The First Sin
Dark Souls 2 – Scholar of the First Sin is an updated version that was released in April for PS4, Xbox one and PC. This edition saw a whole host of changes made to the core game including improved graphics, expanded storyline with additional in-game events and balance tweaks.
Several new NPCs were also introduced who have their own side quests to complete. Also, players were treated to new weapons and armour sets!
All of these changes combined made for a vastly superior experience. Additionally, all the DLC from the original version was included so there’s even more content than before!
This is by far the best edition of Dark Souls 2 all thanks to what From Software did with it. They really knocked it out of the park with this one!
6. New Game Plus
Dark Souls 2 allows players to complete the entire campaign with all of their items, weapons and experience intact. However, there is a New Game Plus mode that allows them to restart the game but keep everything they earned previously.
This can be useful for those who want to play through the campaign again but don’t want to have to go back and do everything from the beginning. It adds a whole new level to this game which makes it even more replayable!
7. You can create your own character and customize their appearance, weapon skills, etc .
This is the only game in the Souls series where you can change your character’s starting gifts. You can also mix and match equipment to create all new playstyles!
No level scaling means that enemies will be more challenging no matter what point of the game you’re at. This is another reason why Dark Souls 2 is superior because this system encourages players to fight enemies that their own level rather than rushing past them like most games.
A new system was introduced in Dark Souls 2 called Weapon Arts . This allowed the player to perform special moves with each weapon which significantly increases its damage output and/or make it more effective in certain situations. For example, if you equip a shield and use Weapon Arts with a spear it will allow you to attack in a completely different manner.
This system is so cool because it essentially creates the need for players to mix and match their equipment rather than just using one set build. It adds another layer of depth to this game that makes it even more interesting.
Why it isn’t good enought?
1. Map Design
The map design in Dark Souls 2 is just atrocious, there’s no other way to put it. The zones are dull and feels like they were taken directly from Demon’s Souls which is a huge step down for this series.
The game’s world is also much smaller than in previous games. There are less NPCs to interact with and you’ll start to notice monsters respawning in zones way too soon after clearing them.
There aren’t even any shortcuts back to the hub area or bonfires which means that players will have to replay the same areas over and over again!
2. Item Selection
There is a very limited amount of weapons and armour in Dark Souls 2. This was done on purpose to encourage players to use Weapon Arts more but it leads to some problems.
Firstly, the result of this system is that most weapons end up having the exact same moveset with few exceptions like using magic or pyromancy. It would’ve been much more interesting if there were a bigger variety of movesets for each weapon.
Secondly, the move sets that are present aren’t very well balanced which leads to some moves being way too powerful. The balance issues associated with Weapon Arts is probably the biggest reason why this system should’ve been dropped from Dark Souls 2 and implemented in a different game.
3. The Gutter
The Gutter is a zone in Dark Souls 2 which you can access through the Black Gulch. Unfortunately, this zone is very broken and it’s not uncommon to see things like dead enemies falling from the sky!
This zone also has one of the worst level designs in all of Dark Souls 2. The level designers could’ve done a much better job than this!
4. Too Many Bosses
Dark Souls 2 has way too many bosses in the base game. The player will spend most of their time fighting a massive amount of reskined enemies which is really lame!
This is one of the major reasons why Dark Souls 2 is inferior to the first game because it simply recycles content for the majority of its playthrough. This isn’t really surprising because it’s a trend that From Software has been doing for quite some time now.
There is also an abundance of unique enemies that mostly appear near the endgame and they’re just as boring as the reskined bosses! They really should’ve made most of these enemies unique considering how little unique enemies there are in this game!
5. Weapon Degradation Is Too Fast
Weapon degradation in Dark Souls 2 is way too fast. You’ll end up using the same weapon for an entire area if you don’t want to waste your time because it will break within a couple of minutes!
This makes no sense because weapons shouldn’t be breaking this quickly especially since the player is carrying several with them at all times. This system is so frustrating because you will probably have to farm for hours just to get a decent weapon to fight with!
